Incorporation Celebration

On December 18, 1869, Ames voters approved the incorporation of Ames. 106 ballots were cast, 81 for incorporation and 25 opposed. William West was elected Ames’ first mayor. This bird’s eye sketch of Ames from the 1875 Andreas Atlas gives an idea of the size of town. The only known building still existing from this photo is the house at 829 Douglas.
