Progress and improvement in highway service and safety were key ingredients in the social and economic progress of our state throughout the 20th Century. The Iowa Department of Transportation has sought to capture much of the contribution made by leading Iowa engineers and others to the system that we depend on so greatly today. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academy of Engineering, the Iowa Department of Transportation sponsored this publication to capture one of Iowa’s key legacies before it was lost forever. Author Leo Landis has done an excellent job of bringing to life some of those earliest days and accomplishments we take so much for granted today. The history of highway development is filled with many accomplishments that have been influential even well beyond Iowa’s borders. Our earliest leaders were instrumental in contributing to a legacy that continues to support the entire national highway program today.
