Book Restoration Workshop

Book Restoration Workshop

Ames History Center
$20 per person

Workshop taught by Eduardo Garcia, trained bookbinder and Drake University professor.

Come to this workshop with one book that is in need of repair. It could be a hardcover or a paperback. We will begin evaluating the different types of book damage from samples provided by the instructor, and learn about the most common restoration techniques that were necessary to complete the reconditioning of the book samples. Then the focus will shift to learning the steps of repairing and replacing a book spine, and you’ll be guided through a series of steps to bring your book back to life.

Materials for students to bring: Notebook, scissors, utility or x-acto knife, straight edge ruler, pencil, and art paint brushes, plus any materials that you might want to use in your book repair.  This could be plain or decorative papers and book cloth.
Common adhesives such as glue and tape will be provided.

Workshop fee: $20 per person. Very limited space - RSVP to info@ameshistory.org by April 11.
