Lincoln Highway: Grand Avenue Railroad Crossing

This is a southeasterly view of the Lincoln Highway's intersection with Grand Avenue in 1936.  The Ames High School Fieldhouse is visible to the left, Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Interurban Station on the right. (Farwell T. Brown Photographic Archive)

This 1937 photo shows the excavation for the Grand Avenue underpass partly completed.  Bids were received in August, 1936, and the contract was awarded to Ben Cole & Son of Ames.  Kimler Coal & Ice office is at far left. (Farwell T. Brown Photographic Archive)

Skunk River Steel Bridge

Similar view of the Grand Avenue railroad crossing after the underpass was constructed.  The depot is gone, but the Ames High School fieldhouse is still visible.  Sorenson's Phillips Oil station can be seen opposite the intersection, where later would be built the entrance to the Iowa Department of Transportation.
