This is the home of Charles Emil Peterson and Omi Hinman Peterson at 123 Lincoln Way, then a rather rural location. The photo shows two couples on the front porch and it is presumed that the couple on the left is the Petersons, as he was known as a tall man. This house was moved to the southwest corner of Lincoln Way and South Russell in 1951 when Ed Sorenson purchased the property. (Private Collection of Ruth Boast)
When Edward Sorenson Sr. took his family on a trip to Illinois in 1948, they saw a Dairy Queen for the first time. Edward built the first Dairy Queen in Ames the next year. His son, Edward Sorenson Jr., continued the family business for 28 years, and Edward's grandson, Allan, currently runs two of the family's seven Dairy Queen franchises in Story and Boone counties. The Dairy Queen remained in this location for over 50 years until 2001 when the franchise was moved and the location taken over by Papa Murphy's Pizza.
